Kasturi Trust(ILID India) run 5 schools (know as Ekalavya schools) in the urban slums of India. The schools cater exclusively to the poorest of poor children in Indian slums and they are almost free of cost to the students. More than 60% of the students are girls from very low income families.

Ekalavya schools provide quality English medium , CBSE and State Board education to about 1500 very poor students from Grade 1 to 10. Attending such free schools and being educated is their only chance to dream big and escape poverty.

Did you know that it just takes 70 cents a day i.e around $250 a year to provide free school education for a child attending Ekalavya School? And just about 30 cents a day for a year takes care of their meals(breakfast and lunch) at school. Is it not an irony that such small amounts can give a child a chance to lead a life with meaning and dignity?

Our short story

On October 31, 2011 a lady walked into our founder Dr.G.K.Jayaram’s home in Bangalore, India, sat down and said that a disaster had befallen. She was the Headmistress of a nearby school. The school offered good quality K to 12 education for the poor slum children from families with income below Rs. 5000 per month ($3 per day for a family of 5). She mentioned that 4500 kids from her schools were going to be out on the street because the philanthropist who founded those schools had suddenly passed away and his successors had announced that the schools would be closed forever at the end of the year. In a country where 8.1 million kids have never even see the doors of a school, let alone drop out, it seemed unconscionable that good schools offering free education for thousands of the poorest kids were to be closed. These children and their families would lose their only chance to a better life.

What Happens Next

Unlike millions of other under privileged children in the world, the 4500 children attending these 10 urban slum schools were lucky. In November 2011, Kasturi Trust, headed by Dr. G K Jayaram, stepped in and decided to ensure that none of the students lose out on their education. Over the next 12 months, numerous generous organisations and philanthropists, worked together to find permanent sponsors for 5 of the 10 schools. Kasturi Trust then adopted the remaining 5 schools and named them Ekalavya schools.  Ekalavya schools provide quality English medium , State Board education to students from Grade 1 to 10. An innovative program called Project Pupil was created as a means to help generate consistent funds to run these schools and help educate these poor children free of cost.

It is simply astonishing to know that it just takes 70 cents a day i.e around $250 a year to provide free  school education for a child attending Ekalavya School. And just about 30 cents a day for a year takes care of their meals(breakfast and lunch) at school. Is it not an irony that such small amounts can give a child a chance to lead a life with meaning and dignity?
