Advaith Trust
Advaith is based in Bangalore, Karnataka and was registered on 9th July
2004. It derives its inspiration from the word “advaith” which means a
collective universal consciousness – an omnipresent goodwill prayer.
Based on the founders’ commitment to the cause of education and
research, this foundation aims to provide opportunities to children
from disadvantaged backgrounds that would help them grow into useful
productive members of society. It is founded on the belief that Quality
education would be the cornerstone of any such endeavor and a holistic
approach to this education would help to catapult them out of the
vicious cycle of deprivation with the effects cascading and resounding
further in the generations to come.
Ankur
For the program to be truly effective, a residential facility – Ankur –
will be provided which will also provide a complementary home
environment – so important for children. This would benefit children
from economically disadvantaged background with a single or no parent.
Initially, Advaith plans to set up homes of 5-10 children in the 3-5
yrs age group. These children will continue to stay in the home through
their high school.
Beyond that based on their interests and capabilities they will join

Karunashraya
In a scheme quite unique in India, members of the Bangalore Hospice
Trust (BHT), decided to take up the not-so-popular cause of caring for
the terminally ill from within the family. This is how was born the
idea of the Home-Care Service. The aim of improving the quality of life
of terminally ill persons was what prompted the setting up of the
Bangalore Hospice Trust in 1994. The Hospice provides in-patient care
to 55 persons in the center appropriately named "Karunashraya" which
means abode of compassion.
It is the philosophy of Caring. It is also
called Palliative Care or Continuing Care. The philosophy is to value
life until death, and to give the dying the dignity of breathing their
last in surroundings of their choice. The motive is a peaceful end.
Thus palliative care moves the emphasis to 'caring' when all hope of
'curing' has been lost.
Experienced and trained teams of Staff Nurse
cum family counsellor look after the medical needs of patients and
counsel their families. They also train families to look after the
basic needs of the patients like changing of clothes and bed linen,
prevention of pressure sores, sponging, administration of palliative
drugs etc., until a peaceful end. Upto 1st August 2008, this service
has cared for just over 2,035 patients of whom 1,975 have died.
